  4. Nova Chess is a chessprogram for MS-DOS and Windows. If you have Windows 95
  5. please do not run in DOS-mode because there may occur problems with your
  6. mouse driver. Run directly from the Windows-Shell or the DOS-window instead.

  9. Requirements:   CPU 80386 SX or better
  10.                 installed mouse driver (only for DOS)
  11.  
  12. Copyright:      Nova Chess is Freeware. It may be copied and used without
  13.                 charge. It is not allowed to sell this software nor to make
  14.                 any modifications to it. All rights are reserved by the
  15.                 author.
  16.                 The author is not responsible for any possible damage caused 
  17.                 by the use of this software.

  19. Controls:       - The menu appears when the mousepointer is placed at the top
  20.                   of the screen and vanishes when the mousepointer is moved
  21.                   downwards.
  22.                   If a topic on the menubar is selected, you may exit without
  23.                   making a selection by pressing the right mousebutton.
  24.  
  25.                 - To make a move click seperatly on the FROM square and on the
  26.                   TO square.
  27.                   To deactivate a selected piece just click on it again.

  29.                 - To stop the computer from calculating a move press the
  30.                   right mousebutton. The computer will make its move
  31.                   immediately.

  33.                 - With the following function keys you can change the colors.
  34.                   There are 64 colors to choose from.
  35.                   The specified function key increases the value by 1,
  36.                   together with SHIFT it decreases the value by 1.

  38.                   F1 - changes the color of the black squares
  39.                   F2 - changes the color of the white squares
  40.                   F3 - changes the color of the black pieces
  41.                   F4 - changes the color of the white pieces
  42.                   F5 - changes the color of the border
  43.                   F6 - changes the color of the text
  44.                   F7 - changes the color of the background
  45.                   F8 - changes the color of the overscan
  46.  
  47.                   F9, SHIFT+F9, F10 and SHIFT+F10 show default colors.

  55.                   Starts a new game.

  57.                 Change sides
  58.                   Switches the sides without turning the board. The computer
  59.                   starts to compute its move immediately.

  61.                 Rotate board
  62.                   Turns the board without switching the sides.

  64.                 Take back
  65.                   Takes back a halfmove. You are allowed to take back as many
  66.                   moves as you wish.
  67.                   Alternatively you may use <Ctrl>+<Backspace>.

  69.                 Exit
  70.                   All changes you have made to colors, levels and options will
  71.                   be saved. After this the program terminates.
  72.                   Note: The actual game can't be saved.

  75.         LEVELS

  77.                 Time
  78.                   Specifies the time the computer will take for calculating
  79.                   its move. The program stays within the selected time-limit.

  81.                 Depth
  82.                   The program stops calculating when it reaches the specified
  83.                   depth. This setting is used to limit the horizon of the
  84.                   program in order to reduce its strength.
  85.                   Beginners should use the setting 1.
  86.                   The computer may take some time to calculate a move if you
  87.                   choose 6 or more halfmoves (depends on the number of pieces
  88.                   on the board).

  94.                   Toggles the sound on/off.
  95.                   The sound isn't correct if you run Nova Chess under Windows.

  97.                 Random
  98.                   The computer does not only play the best move but less good
  99.                   ones, too. The program is slower with this setting on.

  102.                   The line of best moves (=main line) is displayed at the
  103.                   bottom of the screen.
  104.                   Beginners get some hints by examining the second move of
  105.                   this line because the computer calculated it as the best
  106.                   response.
